Student Scores Show Struggles

Georgia's latest Milestones student test results showed fewer than half scored proficient or better in most subjects and grades.

Students showed some gains in math while posting significant drops in fifth- and eighth-grade English. Overall, scores still generally remain lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic.

State officials hope new reading standards, teacher retraining, literacy coaches, and universal screening will boost English results in the coming years.

Math scores improved for a second year following the implementation of Georgia's new K-12 mathematics standards during the 2023-2024 school year.

RFK Jr. Visits CDC

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention campus in Atlanta on Monday.

Kennedy also met with the widow of DeKalb County police officer David Rose, who was killed in Friday's shooting that shattered windows across several buildings and the main guard booth.

CDC staff worked remotely while repair work continued.

On Saturday, Kennedy issued a statement of sympathy for Rose's family and CDC workers. On Monday, the agency posted information about a CDC Foundation fundraiser to honor Rose and assist his family.

Preseason Poll Offers Optimism

The Georgia Bulldogs landed at No. 5 in the preseason college football poll released Monday, trailing Texas, Penn State, Ohio State, and Clemson. Georgia received one first-place vote.

Georgia Tech wasn't far off the top 25, placing sixth among "others receiving votes"—equal to a No. 31 ranking—as the Yellowjackets draw national buzz for their potential this year.

For Georgia, it is the eighth straight year the team made the AP preseason top five. The Bulldogs' schedule includes five ranked opponents, headlined by No. 1 Texas and No. 8 Alabama.
