 | TOKYO -- Wearing masks to fight infection in Japan didn't start with COVID-19 and probably won't end with it. But the government is poised to tweak its guidance on the practice. Japan plans to lift indoor mask recommendations in public places if it reclassifies COVID-19 as a less serious infectious disease, Nikkei has learned. The government now recommends people wear masks indoors when they talk and don't maintain social distancing. Masking remains the norm on commuter trains and in other crowded places.
