In our office, we kick around a semi-joking hashtag: #youhearditherefirst. It comes up when we see news outlets with bigger budgets and greater resources writing stories that we’ve already covered weeks, even months, before. This isn’t new; everyone writes about the same stuff all the time. And we do it, too. Still, it’s nice to be recognized as the ones initiating the conversation, and lifting up urban stories that deserve a wider audience.
Last week’s New York Times article about a group of Bronx renters organizing to own their apartment building was covered by our housing correspondent, Roshan Abraham, back in March. Other topics we’ve covered for years are suddenly entering the national conversation as well: guaranteed income; public banking; worker co-ops; and more. It’s why we need you to support the journalism we produce. If you can, please donate to our spring fundraiser, which will subsidize our summer Urban Affairs Intern. This will be our fourth year partnering with the Emma Bowen Foundation, which places journalism students of color in paid media internships.
