To try to stop humanity’s downfall, the Director sends the consciousness of surviving humans back through time into people living in the 21st century to carry out missions. The spoiler is the Director’s true identity. It’s a quantum computer powered artificial intelligence. Of course, you don’t need an all-powerful AI quantum computer to make better decisions than Congress, the President, the Federal Reserve, or the Supreme Court. A Magic 8-Ball or a bag of fortune cookies would be improvement enough. And if programmed well, ChatGPT would have been ethical enough to not invade Iraq in search of nonexistent weapons… smart enough to know that shutting the country down for months was a poor way to fight a pandemic… and sane enough to have avoided giving us “transient” inflation that is still running hot after five years. I’ve seen enough Terminator movies to know that rule by an AI overlord wouldn’t be all sunshine and roses. But this does bring up one of the primary strengths of quantum computers. They are massively superior to classical computers in solving optimization problems. That’s down to their ability to process vast amounts of information and explore multiple solutions simultaneously. It’s the basic unit of information. A bit can exist in only one of two states at a given time: 0 (false) and 1 (true). The basic unit of information in quantum computing, on the other hand, is a qubit (quantum bit). Unlike a classical bit, a qubit can exist in three states: 0 (false), 1 (true), and a “superposition” of 0 and 1 (false and true) at the same time. Qubits can also be entangled, meaning their states are linked even if they are physically separated. And this is where things really start to feel like science fiction… Einstein called entanglement “spooky action at a distance.” That sums it up well. If you have two entangled qubits, knowing something about one instantly reveals information about the other… no matter how far apart they are. This it allows quantum circuits to coordinate computations more efficiently than classical computers. It allows quantum computers to evaluate multiple possible solutions at the same time, making it possible to quickly solve complex problems much faster than classical computers can. Think of it this way… Regular computing is like a speed reader who can read faster than humans, but still only one page at a time.
