He founded the China Market Research Group, a consultancy, and has written the bestsellers The End of Cheap China, The End of Copycat China, and The War for China’s Wallet. These books marked turning points in the Chinese economy’s recent history and have probably helped some readers continue making money in China despite the profoundly changed business climate. Rein is one of the US’s most prominent China bulls, and he is generally supportive of the Chinese Communist Party. These ingredients make The Split a commendable read except for the faint-hearted. The book starts on its main theme, the so-called split between China and the US, by telling the story of “Bill,” a manager running the Asia-Pacific region for a US tech company. After having spent considerable efforts arranging a business deal with a Chinese provincial government, the Ukraine war broke out, and his boss canceled Bill’s deal over fears of sanctions. While the US side lost money as a result, the Chinese side was forced to switch to Chinese suppliers. Of course, this anecdote justifies China’s strides to achieve technological autarky. Rein goes a step further, arguing that Japan was in a similar situation in the 1970s when the US strongarmed its new technological prowess into subordination with restrictions on the Japanese economy… Click to subscribe and continue reading.
