| | Welcome to our series on how to move forward after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. Over the course of 3 days, we're going to share evidence-based information and resources to help you not just understand your diagnosis, but take positive action toward managing your care.
We're proud of you for taking this important step on your path forward! | Understanding the stages of breast cancer | Your doctor will determine the cancer's stage based on the size of the tumor(s) and how much it has spread. The most common staging system for breast cancer is the TNM system.
Once your doctor has determined the values for T, N, and M, this information will be used to assign an overall stage. There are technically 5 stages of breast cancer numbered 0 to 4. (Note: Some experts don't include stage 0 as a breast cancer stage because this is a precancerous stage that may never develop into invasive cancer.) | • | Stage 0: Abnormal cells have been detected that could turn into cancer in the future. | | • | Stage 1 (I): The tumor is small and localized to the breast. There may be a small amount of cancer in nearby lymph nodes. | | • | Stage 2 (II): The tumor is still localized to the breast but is larger and may have spread to several nearby lymph nodes. | | • | Stage 3 (III): This stage includes cancers that have spread to the skin, the chest wall, or multiple lymph nodes in or near the breast. | | • | Stage 4 (IV): This is metastatic breast cancer, meaning it has spread to one or more distant parts of the body, most commonly the bones, lungs, or liver. | | Staging helps your care team formulate a treatment plan and understand the likelihood of a treatment's success. Tomorrow, we'll talk more about treatments and how they're used. | How to find support for your journey | The emotional effects of breast cancer may be just as impactful as the physical effects. But did you know there's an entire ecosystem of support that exists to support people just like you? Click the button below to receive a downloadable and printable guide to some of those resources. | | We hope you can find some comfort in the fact that many, many people are — and have been — exactly where you are right now. In fact, 13% of women in the United States will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. If you take one thing away from today, let it be that you're never alone in this journey.
