| | | | | MediaCity boss defends growth plans after warning Salford Quays could become an overdeveloped 'supercity' | | | | | | Community facilities will form a vital part of expansion plans at Salford Quays following claims the area could become an overdeveloped "supercity.
The Quays was transformed in one of the UK's most successful regeneration projects after the closure of the Manchester Ship Canal docks in 1982, with its modern makeover hosting the BBC and ITV around MediaCity, numerous apartment blocks, retail outlets and cultural venues including the Lowry.
Paul Heilbron of Salford Lib Dems – a resident in the Quays – said plans to build thousands of homes in the area could change it beyond recognition, and leave residents without adequate public services. Mr Heilbron warned Salford Quays residents were already struggling with a lack of local services, with just one medical centre serving the ward and trams "bursting" with commuters.
But Labour officials and councillors say local communities will be consulted as the development goes on, while Stephen Wild, MediaCity managing director, says the scheme will include a "convenience-led town centre offering" with community facilities.
Major housing schemes have been approved in MediaCity and Pier 7, while an application has been tabled to build a further 3,000 homes at the nearby Regent Retail Park. That is alongside plans for a £200m redevelopment of Salford Soapworks bringing 450 apartments, and a scheme for more than 1,000 homes on Michigan Avenue.
Coun Mike McCusker, lead member for planning, transport and sustainable development at Salford City Council, said: "Salford Quays used to be an empty dockland and is now home to one of Europe's most successful water regeneration projects. The overall aim is to create an area that works for everyone, with people at the centre of our vision." Read the full story here. Read more | | | | |

Plans have already been approved for the massive Crown Works film studio – a production hub which will dominate the banks of the River Wear in Sunderland and has the potential to create more than 8,000 jobs while also transforming the region's screen industry. FulwellCain, a joint venture between Fulwell 73 and investment firm Cain International, is driving forward the £475m scheme.
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and members of the North East Combined Authority have now rubber-stamped a £25m investment in the region's screen industry at its Cabinet meeting, allowing preparation works to begin on the site at Pallion. It is also predicted that, as the development and its supply chain progresses over the next 10 years, it could add £2bn to the region's economy.
Elsewhere in the region, prime brownfield site Forth Banks, overlooking the River Tyne, received a £5m funding boost from the North East Mayor.
The site has been plagued by a number of challenges which have prevented the private sector from bringing forward a scheme. However, the site has been earmarked for development for years and the North East Combined Authority (NECA), Newcastle City Council, Network Rail and Homes England have been working collaboratively to drive forward the project.
