Bailout or lifeline? Americans have made it clear they don’t want a repeat of the 2008 financial crisis, when the government stepped in to rescue big banks and save the economy. But the Biden administration insists its recent efforts to rescue Silicon Valley and Signature Banks are a "lifeline" for small businesses and jobs, not a bailout.
🎧 But it’s not just about the "semantics around the word bailout," NPR’s Asma Khalid said on the Up Firstpodcast this morning. "It’s about containing the crisis itself." She says doing too little could raise concerns the bank failures could spread, which could "alter the course of Biden’s presidency." ➡️ Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen defended U.S actions at a banking conference yesterday and suggested smaller banks could be eligible for the same type of emergency protections, if they needed it. ➡️ The administration has repeatedly said taxpayer dollars are not on the hook because of their aid to the two mid-sized banks. But it doesn’t mean the banking turmoil won’t affect you at all. Here’s five ways it might.
While Biden ponders the course of his presidency amid turmoil in the banking world, a potential indictment could alter the course of Donald Trump’s presidential run. The former president says he will still run in 2024 even if he’s charged with a crime. Legal experts say there’s nothing stopping him, but winning is another story.
