Australia Sees Home Prices Rebound in February

Home prices across Australia were up 0.18% in February with growth seen in every capital city, except Hobart, according to the latest PropTrack Home Prices report. While rising interest rates have shrunken the potential buyer pool, the limited supply of housing inventory in Australia has kept competition strong—and insulated values. Fort Lauderdale Home Sales Drop Nearly 40%

Are buyers abandoning ship in America's yachting capital? Home sales in the Greater Fort Lauderdale Area dropped 39.4% year over year in January, according to the latest figures from the Miami Association of Realtors. The losses were nearly identical across property types, with single-family-home sales and existing-condo sales falling 39.2% and 39.5%, respectively. Lack of inventory and rising mortgage rates were named as the culprits behind the cratering decline. Despite the drop in sales, prices in the market grew, with median single-family-home values growing 8% year over year in January to $540,000, and median existing-condo values increasing 12.5% year over year to $269,900. British Mortgage Approvals Hit Lowest Level Since 2009

Rising interest rates, tied to former Prime Minister Liz Truss's September 2022 mini-budget, have sent potential buyers fleeing from the housing market. According to the Bank of England, mortgage approvals in January fell for the fifth month in a row and reached the lowest level (excluding the Covid-19 lockdown months of 2020) since 2009, amid the fallout from the global financial crisis. Despite the five months of declining mortgage approvals, there is some hope that the bottom has already been reached, as January's decline was smaller than the four previous months, indicating some confidence may be returning to the market.
