Hey y’all - Wanted to give the OGs a little update on why I’m taking on this new pod (I promise it’s the last one, I got a lot happening!!) When I was reflecting on what I wanted to do in 2025 over the holidays, it felt like the one area where I could both a) bring value to “The Discourse” and b) get out of my bubble and learn a bit was by focusing on what’s going on with Gen Z, particularly young men born between the mid-1990s and mid-2010s. Clearly the 2024 election showed this is a group the pro-democracy coalition is struggling to reach, and it seems like we have a shortage of messengers who are capable of reaching them. So my goal for the year is to try and better understand why they are so disaffected and to have conversations (or debates where appropriate) on their platforms but also to create a place for those convos on ours. I’m pumped that my man Cam Kasky is willing to do this with me. He started March for Our Lives after the Parkland shooting and is deeply connected in the Gen Z activist world. But he’s also a good hang and has a lot of pals outside the woke liberal bubble that we can bring on for a more diverse array of perspectives. Our plan is to hash out whatever is in the news every week and then have a fun, in-depth conversation with someone else from Gen Z either about a particular topic that they care about or the culture more broadly. Maybe (hopefully) this evolves beyond that and we find other ways to engage these alternately anxious and looksmaxxing boys (more on looksmaxxing in episode 1), but this seems like a good place to start. Hope y'all enjoy and if you think there’s someone in your life who is either in Gen Z -- or maybe parenting a Gen Z -- who might get some value from these convos please share this with them. (The bosses want me to note there will be lots of cussing and even some sex talk so be judicious on who you think this might be for!) Covid-19 locked Gen Z up during their formative years, and the GOP offered them a party. Sure, there’s some nazism mixed in with the drinks, but in a loneliness pandemic, you take what highs you can get. Tim and Cam discuss how the pandemic was a key factor to pushing Gen Z to the right. Plus, former Disney Channel star turned political operative Joshua Rush joins Tim and Cam to defends the activist tactics of Gen Z and explain why, in the face of nonstop nihilism, he still has optimism for the future of America.
