The Cost of Cutting
Curated by
Carl Sullivan, North America Managing Editor, Flipboard
I understand the desire of fiscal conservatives to cut government spending. As with all large organizations, there are surely opportunities to be more efficient. Even Democrats like Bill Clinton have made big moves to save money in the past. But what many people object to is the way Elon Musk is slashing and burning through Washington, often fueled by misinformation (for example, he sees dead people where there are none). Imagine if President Biden had appointed George Soros to lead DOGE, which subsequently shut down ICE and slashed defense spending. Would that be OK? And let's not lose sight of the bigger picture, as explained by Axios: "The only way to truly reduce the deficit is to target the very programs Trump refuses to touch — defense, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. They account for 86% of the budget."
