Between the Sri Lankan presidential polls and Modi’s US visit, Sunday was all about world politics.

Sri Lanka got its first Marxist president on 22 September after Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the JVP party—hailed as an ‘emblem of change’, ‘the man Sri Lanka needs’—beat his rivals Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa in a tight race (neither was quite prepared for the populist wave that Dissanayake rode all the way to victory). Read this story by Vandana Menon, who is currently reporting from Colombo, to know more about him.

In the US, Indian Prime Minister Modi has been in and out of meetings. During his three-day trip to the US for the Quad Leaders' summit, he also sat down with President Joe Biden for a bilateral meeting. The two leaders covered a lot of ground, discussing everything from defense, security, and space to emerging technologies, clean energy, and the repatriation of antiques stolen or trafficked from India. To know how the talks went, read Keshav Padmanabhan’s story.

Meanwhile, in India, an incident of alleged custodial assault in Odisha has pitted the Army against the police. The controversy stems from claims that Bhubaneswar police assaulted a lawyer and restaurant owner and unlawfully detained her fiancé, an Army captain. In response, a serving general has written to the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, condemning the police's actions. The incident has since polarised Army veterans and retired police officers, with both sides firing off allegations. Smruti Deshpande and Bismee Taskin bring you both sides.

On the health front, in a first, the Indian Cancer Genome Atlas (ICGA) Foundation has launched a data portal designed to serve as a comprehensive repository for India-specific cancer genomics. This has been done to improve researchers’ understanding of the genetic variations of cancer in India and help tailor cancer treatments for patients. Soumya Pillai’s story on the portal’s launch.
