Between the Sri Lankan presidential polls and Modi’s US visit, Sunday was all about world politics. Sri Lanka got its first Marxist president on 22 September after Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the JVP party—hailed as an ‘emblem of change’, ‘the man Sri Lanka needs’—beat his rivals Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa in a tight race (neither was quite prepared for the populist wave that Dissanayake rode all the way to victory). The controversy stems from claims that Bhubaneswar police assaulted a lawyer and restaurant owner and unlawfully detained her fiancé, an Army captain. In response, a serving general has written to the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, condemning the police's actions.
