| | | Since we last wrote, our friends at All Things Considered began running a limited series highlighting the best entries to the Contest from a handful of genres. Felix Contreras, host of the podcast Alt.Latino, shared the best Latin entries, featuring Ama, Flaco el Jandro, Mireya Ramos and Los Quinceaneros. And All Songs Considered host (and Contest judge) Robin Hilton revealed his favorite folk entries, which included JoJo DiSalvo, George Perkins and Palmyra. |
| And the folks at NPR’s Weekend Edition have continued to share the stories behind standout entries. Most recently they spoke with Ellie Barber, cellist and singer of Ollella, about her entry “Tea Kettle Tea,” which is about her aunt who passed away from cancer when Ellie was 11. Her aunt was not only a second mother figure to her, but also her first music teacher, Ellie shares. The two had a tradition of drinking tea when they were together. “I still make tea kettle tea / Hoping that you’ll come home to me / I dream of naps nestled in your knee / It was your love that set me free,” she sings over a swelling cello. She says “the lyrics are exactly what I remember — they're vignettes of life being creative and joyful in her house; and then there are these moments that I remember of the two-year period of her death.” |
| Ellie also shares that the song has helped her connect to others who are grieving at her live shows. “I hope this song helps people grieve in their own ways,” she says. You can hear her full interview here. |

| A quick editor’s note before we go: With the tour conclusion, you’ll now hear from us at the end of each month instead of weekly. This summer, we’ll continue to share more Contest stories and best entries on Weekend Edition and All Things Considered — and right here, too, so stay tuned! |
| And while we won’t be in your inboxes as frequently, we’d still love to hear from you as we plan for next year’s Contest behind the scenes. If you’ve released new music, connected with an artist through the Contest or have something else to share, let us know by simply replying to this email. |
