Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. begins a visit to Japan on Wednesday as Manila seeks to strengthen its ties with Tokyo. Chris Hipkins, New Zealand's new prime minister, will visit Canberra to meet his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, while Malaysia's Anwar Ibrahim will visit Thailand, the latest in a string of official trips Anwar is making to other Southeast Asian nations. As for corporate news, some of Japan's most prominent companies -- Toyota Motor, Nissan Motor, Nintendo and SoftBank Group among them -- will release their quarterly earnings this week. In addition, Nissan and partner Renault of France are expected to hold a news conference on Monday to announce a reworked capital and business alliance. MONDAY China-Hong Kong travel fully resumes Cross-border travel between China's mainland and Hong Kong fully resumes. A quota system and mandated COVID-19 tests -- which remained in place even after China reopened its borders to the world in early January -- will be scrapped to encourage more trips by business and leisure travelers, and to boost the Chinese and Hong Kong economies. National security trial for Hong Kong activists A high-profile national security trial for dozens of Hong Kong democracy activists is due to begin after two years of delays. Forty-seven democracy activists, former lawmakers and academics were indicted in February 2021 for conspiring to subvert state power. The charge was in relation to an unofficial independent primary election for a city legislature election that was eventually postponed. Nissan-Renault alliance Nissan Motor and Renault will hold a joint news conference in London to announce their agreement on the new foundations of their partnership, including Renault reducing its stake in Nissan, Nissan taking a stake in Renault's new EV company and the two automakers partnering in India and elsewhere. The CEOs of both companies and of Mitsubishi Motors, the third member of the alliance, are expected to attend. Indonesia GDP Indonesia will announce gross domestic product figures for the fourth quarter and full year of 2022. The country's central bank, Bank Indonesia, has forecast a 4.8% economic expansion for the October-December period, slower than the previous three quarters, and 5.2% growth for all of 2022. TUESDAY New Zealand's new prime minister visits Australia Chris Hipkins will meet his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, in Canberra. It will be Hipkins' first international trip since taking over from former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who abruptly resigned. The leaders are expected to discuss economic and security issues as each nation works to strengthen its engagement with the Pacific and Indo-Pacific regions. Monetary policy: Reserve Bank of Australia Earnings: SoftBank Group, Nintendo WEDNESDAY Marcos visits Japan Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. makes an "official working visit" to Japan from Wednesday to Feb. 12 as Manila seeks to strengthen its "strategic partnership" with Tokyo. Marcos will meet with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. He will also meet with Japanese investors during the trip. Manila and Tokyo plan to sign agreements on infrastructure, defense, agriculture and loans. Asia Green Tech Summit Nikkei and the Financial Times will host the inaugural Asia Green Tech Summit in Singapore. The meeting will bring together investors, entrepreneurs and business leaders from around the world to discuss how finance and technologies can be deployed at scale to support the transition to a net-zero world. 75th founding anniversary of the Korean People's Army North Korea marks the 75th anniversary of the Korean People's Army's foundation. Pyongyang is preparing a military parade, mobilizing several hundred military trucks, according to satellite images obtained by 38 North, a publication of the U.S.-based Stimson Center. To counter the regime under Kim Jong Un, South Korea, the U.S. and Japan are strengthening their military cooperation by intensifying joint drills and sharing key intelligence. Monetary policy: Reserve Bank of India THURSDAY Anwar visits Thailand Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's first official visit to Thailand will also be his fourth stop on a regional tour he began upon becoming prime minister in November. While his agenda is expected to cover economic cooperation and regional security, Anwar will also be looking for progress on peace talks between Bangkok and Thai-Malay rebels in the South, which Malaysia has been facilitating since 2013.
