Late but not too late for East Bengal

The entries and fixtures of the 131st Durand Cup removed the last shreds of doubt: East Bengal are getting ready to the season. By the standard of other teams in the Indian Super League (ISL), they are late but never in the past three years have the red-and-golds got this far this soon. Buzz at the club is that pre-seasons could start next week and the possibility of playing the Kolkata league is brighter than it ever was.

Only the formalities of the agreement with commercial partners remain, people at the club say. Even then, a delayed start to team building means again East Bengal will face the usual problems since being hand-held into ISL by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in 2020: the best in the competition have been taken; Vishal Kaith, Roy Krishna and Jorge Pereyra Diaz being the latest additions to that list.

Goalkeeper Kaith joined ATK Mohun Bagan who have released their goalscoring totem Krishna, 34, replacing him with 29-year-old Dimitrio Petratos who represented Australia in the 2018 World Cup. Krishna will now team with Sunil Chhetri and Diaz has been bought by Mumbai City FC who have signed Greg Stewart, the Golden Ball winner in 21-22, and Alberto Noguera.

The foreign hand

So, another season of disappointment awaits, right? That will hinge on how smart the recruitments are. And how good the six imports will be. This could seem anything from blasphemous to odious for East Bengal tragics but the club could learn from the first three seasons of ATK. True, more foreigners were allowed then but two ISL titles and a semi-final came because ATK’s spine comprised quality imports, no disrespect to the others in the roster.

East Bengal have been let down on that count since foraying into ISL. By convincing Ivan Gonzalez to sign when there was no guarantee who would bankroll them, the club may have started on the right track. The former FC Goa centre-back’s leadership qualities are known and he will be crucial to the rebuilding process which East Bengal are undergoing for the third straight season. They have till August 31 and the January window, assuming India is not banned, to get this right. With the ISL unlikely to be in a bio-bubble, getting good foreign players could be easier.

If they are willing to pay transfer fees some good Indian players too would be available. East Bengal have also signed goalie Pawan Kumar, right-back Mohammad Rakip, centre-back Sarthak Golui and midfielders Wahengbam Angousana and Mobashir Rahman and around 17 players for the Kolkata league. So training can start and unlike the past two seasons, Durand Cup and Kolkata league will provide crucial match practice before ISL. Difficult it will be for one of India’s two most successful clubs to treat competitions they have won 16 (Durand) and 39 times as stepping stones for the season but commonsense should replace pining for an era past.

East Bengal will also need a head coach who understands India, another count they have faltered on earlier. Names doing the rounds are Stephen Constantine and Jorge Costa, captain of the Champions League winning Porto and a former Portugal international. Both know football in India, a pre-requisite almost when time is short and the team unformed.

Being India coach from 2002-05 and 2015-19, puts Constantine at an advantage; he would have a better understanding of the idea of East Bengal who turn 102 next month. The Anglo-Cypriot is also known to put out teams that are difficult to break down. Had his India held out for a little longer against Bahrain, history would have been made in 2019.

Altered format

East Bengal should also be looking to use the changed ISL format to their advantage. Six, not four are eligible for play-off berths meaning if East Bengal are in the top sextet, they will be within a single-leg knockout game of making the last-four stage. And if things stay like this, they will get to play at a throbbing, heaving Salt Lake stadium and not in an empty cauldron in Goa. So, yes, things could have been better but discount East Bengal putting up a fight at your peril.
