In today’s lead story by Cinnamon Janzer we hear how the Cherokee Nation is finding creative ways to preserve their language. Although the Cherokee Nation is the largest tribe in the U.S., its language has been all but lost. Why? The brutal Trail of Tears forced migration in the 1830s killed around 4,000 Cherokee, and surviving children were taken against family wishes to white-run boarding schools to “Americanize” Indigenous students. In August 2022, Cherokee filmmaker Jeremy Charles, in collaboration with Horton Records, will release Anvdvnelisgi, a collection of contemporary songs sung entirely in Cherokee. Read more about the project in today’s first slot.
As a friendly reminder: Next City is reaching the tail end of our fundraising efforts to add a new intern of color to the team this summer. We’re behind on our $10,000 goal that we need to reach by the end of this month. Help us meet our goal and make a donation today. And if you want to learn more about how nonprofit news outlets such as Next City are working to revitalize journalism and give voice to the voiceless, listen to this week’s podcast.
