| Good morning Gurpartap, When it comes to economic opportunities it doesn't get much bigger than this. Australia has the capacity to make the fuel that makes the world go round — or, to be precise, the fuel that makes things go round the world. Aviation biofuel is the next breakthrough leap in the push to make flying less carbon intensive and Australia is poised to create a new $13 billion industry if it can set up refining facilities here to process the feedstock we already produce. But industry giants say the window to do that is closing and Australia needs to act fast if it is to stop overseas competitors seizing the initiative. It's a story we have heard shouted from the rooftops throughout the Back Australia campaign: An endless horizon of opportunities just crying out for action. In this case the Australian CEO of jet-building giant Airbus says the government has as little as six to 12 months to introduce a sustainable aviation fuel mandate that would support the development of a refining industry here. If not, warns Stephen Forshaw, local crops capable of feeding a new refining sector would instead be "hoovered up" by the likes of Singapore. It shows not only just how much is at stake in these emerging 21st century industries but also the enormous economic benefits ripe to be seized. And, even more importantly, the opportunity to strengthen our national security and sovereignty. Indeed, the ADF itself wants to be able to fuel its jets with Australian-made sustainable aviation fuel so that it is not exposed to international imports — an obvious risk in the event of a national emergency. As we have already revealed, Australia has not been meeting its required 90 days worth of oil supplies for more than a decade, and we currently have only around half of what we are required to under our treaty agreement with the International Energy Agency. This is what backing Australia is all about: Making sure we have not just the industrial strength to reach our economic potential but also the industrial strength we need to ensure our security as a nation. |
