Friday's Featured Story The Best AI for Picking Stocks, Ranked by PerformanceWritten by Thomas Hughes. Published 10/22/2025.
Key Points - Seven AI models and 30 humans picked one unique stock under identical rules, aiming for the highest return on a $1,000 investment over three months.
- ChatGPT selected the top-performing stock of all the AI picks, while other AI stock choices delivered mixed results.
- In the end, a human pick outperformed all others.
Ever wonder which AI model is best at picking stocks? So did the MarketBeat team. They ran a lighthearted contest to find out — and the results may surprise you. Here's a look at the seven leading AI models, their picks, and how those picks performed. AI Stock Picking Contest Parameters Central banks around the world are hoarding gold at one of the fastest rates in history — and former Goldman Sachs VP Dr. David Eifrig says this move goes far beyond a simple bull market. In a new free presentation, he reveals why the world's financial elite are locking down gold, what it could mean for your savings, and the three steps he recommends taking immediately. Click here to watch Dr. Eifrig's full broadcast before it's taken offline Seven popular AI models—ChatGPT, ChatGPT Deep Research, Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity—competed alongside 30 human participants to provide a broad comparison. The rules of the contest were simple: - Choose one stock listed on NYSE, NASDAQ, TSE, or LON.
- Exclude ETFs, crypto, and mutual funds.
- No duplicate picks: once a stock was chosen, others couldn't select it.
- Select the stock you believe will deliver the greatest percentage gain on a $1,000 investment between the market close on July 21 and the market close on October 21.
1. ChatGPT: SoundHound's 55.7% Gain ChatGPT, the model that helped spark the recent AI wave, finished 7th overall and was the top-performing AI model. What sets ChatGPT apart is its ability to produce coherent, conversational responses while maintaining context over a session. For the contest, ChatGPT chose SoundHound AI (NASDAQ: SOUN), which gained 55.7% during the period, driven by enthusiasm for real-world AI applications and new commercial partnerships. SoundHound is a leader in voice-actuated AI and a speech-to-meaning approach that enables faster, more accurate translations and conversational interfaces. 2. Claude Sonnet: ASTS Space Mobile's 38.7% Gain Claude Sonnet, known for its balanced language, reasoning, and coding capabilities, picked ASTS Space Mobile (NASDAQ: ASTS), which returned 38.7% during the contest. It placed second among AI models and 13th overall. ASTS is notable for its role in the mobile industry and its rapidly expanding satellite network. The company expects near-complete coverage of key Northern Hemisphere markets within two years and reported a rapid revenue ramp beginning this quarter. The analyst consensus predicts a quadruple-digit year-over-year revenue gain, with growth accelerating over the next several quarters and remaining at a high pace thereafter. Profitability is projected by 2027, and some observers believe those estimates may be conservative. 3. ChatGPT Deep Research: Larimar Therapeutics' 31.9% Gain ChatGPT Deep Research is a variation of ChatGPT designed to produce a more extensive, research-style answer. The model finished third among AI entries and 16th overall. It selected Larimar Therapeutics (NASDAQ: LRMR), which rose about 31.9% over the trial period. Larimar is a clinical-stage biopharma with several near-term catalysts, including Phase III results, new program launches, and an anticipated BLA filing with potential for accelerated approvals. The analyst consensus projects over 300% upside, signalling strong optimism that the stock could advance further. 4. Perplexity: Regencell Biosciences' 12.2% Gain Perplexity is known for delivering search-engine-style answers, synthesizing web content while citing sources. It finished fourth among AI models and 21st overall, picking Regencell Biosciences (NASDAQ: RGC), which returned roughly 12.2% during the contest. Regencell is attempting to commercialize traditional Chinese medicine therapies for ADHD and autism but has minimal institutional support. The single analyst tracked by MarketBeat rates the stock as a Sell, and institutions own less than 0.5% of the shares, with no clear catalysts apparent. 5. Gemini: Super Micro Computers' 6.5% Gain Google's Gemini, which ranked fifth among AI models and 23rd overall, chose Super Micro Computers (NASDAQ: SMCI). Gemini is noted for its multi-modality and integration with Google's ecosystem. Super Micro is positioned to benefit from an AI-driven surge in demand for servers, though that upside has not fully materialized yet. That could change with the upcoming earnings report; until then, the stock continues to struggle with investor confidence after last year's financial issues. Many major tech companies have announced plans to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on data centers over the next three to five years, and SMCI's GPU servers are likely to play a significant role in supporting that buildout. 6. Claude Opus: Replimune's 34.3% Loss Claude Opus, recognized for strong reasoning, multimodality, and contextual understanding, made a riskier choice by selecting Replimune Group (NASDAQ: REPL), despite high short interest and weakening analyst sentiment. Replimune declined about 34.3%, placing Claude sixth among AI entries and near the bottom overall. Replimune focuses on oncolytic therapies for cancer but faces a challenging regulatory outlook. Its recent BLA submission was denied and, although resubmitted, market sentiment remains cautious. Analyst sentiment has shifted from Buy to Reduce, and downward revisions to price targets have pressured the share price. 7. Grok: MoonLake Immunotherapies' 82.9% Loss Grok finished last among AI models and last overall. Known for its personality and edgy tone, Grok uses real-time data from the X platform to inform its answers. Its pick, MoonLake Immunotherapies (NASDAQ: MLTX), plunged about 82.9% during the contest. MoonLake, which develops immunotherapies for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, released mixed trial results on Sept. 29 — midway through the contest — that prompted a wave of downgrades and price-target cuts, sending the stock into the single-digit share-price range. The Real Winner: A Human While AI can be a useful tool for stock selection, not every model performed well. The contest's overall winner was a human participant who picked Hut 8 Corp. (NASDAQ: HUT). Shares of the Bitcoin-mining and high-performance computing company soared 120.15% during the contest period. The result highlights an important takeaway: AI can augment research and idea generation, but it hasn't yet replaced human instinct, experience, and judgment in stock picking.
