Key Points

  • Seven AI models and 30 humans picked one unique stock under identical rules, aiming for the highest return on a $1,000 investment over three months.
  • ChatGPT selected the top-performing stock of all the AI picks, while other AI stock choices delivered mixed results.
  • In the end, a human pick outperformed all others.

Ever wondered which AI model is best at picking stocks? The team at MarketBeat ran a lighthearted contest to find out, and the results may surprise you.

Below are the seven leading AI models, what each chose, and how those picks performed.

Final 48 Hours to Invest (Ad)

Have you heard of this $1 'magic' AI stock? They are building what some people are calling 'ChatGPT with eyes'.

And it might be as revolutionary as the introduction of the iPhone was. But very few people have actually heard of this stock.

And there's a weird, little-known way investors can get in for less than $1 / share. But hurry... the last chance to invest at their current valuation is October 30.

Seven popular AI models—ChatGPT, ChatGPT Deep Research, Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity—and 30 humans were asked to submit stock picks under identical rules, providing a broad comparison between AI and human choices.

The contest rules were:

  • Choose one stock listed only on the NYSE, NASDAQ, TSE, or LON.
  • Exclude ETFs, crypto, and mutual funds.
  • Avoid duplicate picks (you could not choose a stock another participant had already selected).
  • Select the stock you believe will deliver the greatest percentage gain on a $1,000 investment between the market close on July 21 and the market close on October 21.

1. ChatGPT: SoundHound's 55.7% Gain

ChatGPT, the model that helped kick off the recent AI surge, finished as the top AI performer and placed seventh overall.

Compared with many peers, ChatGPT produces particularly coherent, conversational responses and can maintain context while adapting to follow-up prompts.

For the contest, ChatGPT chose SoundHound AI (NASDAQ: SOUN), which gained 55.7% during the period, driven by enthusiasm for real-world AI applications and new commercial partnerships. SoundHound is a leader in voice-actuated AI and employs a speech-to-meaning approach that enables faster, more accurate translations and conversational interfaces.

2. Claude Sonnet: ASTS Space Mobile's 38.7% Gain

Claude Sonnet, known for its balance of conversational fluency, reasoning, and coding skills, picked ASTS Space Mobile (NASDAQ: ASTS) and saw a 38.7% gain.

The model placed second among AIs and 13th overall.

ASTS is notable for its position in the mobile industry and its rapidly expanding satellite network. The company projects near-complete coverage of key Northern Hemisphere markets within two years, with a revenue ramp that began this quarter.

The analyst consensus anticipates a quadruple-digit year-over-year revenue increase, followed by sustained high triple-digit growth for subsequent quarters. Analysts expect profitability by 2027, and those forecasts may prove conservative.

3. ChatGPT Deep Research: Larimar Therapeutics' 31.9% Gain

ChatGPT Deep Research is a variant that delivers more extensive, research-style responses.

This model finished third among AIs and 16th overall.

It selected Larimar Therapeutics (NASDAQ: LRMR), which rose 31.9% during the trial period.

Larimar is a clinical-stage biopharma with several upcoming catalysts, including Phase III results, new research initiatives, and anticipated BLA filings and accelerated approval pathways. The analyst consensus projects over 300% upside, reflecting strong optimism for further price appreciation.

4. Perplexity: Regencell Biosciences' 12.2% Gain

Perplexity is an AI model valued for its search-engine-like responses.

It scours the web and synthesizes information while citing sources.

Perplexity finished fourth among AIs and 21st overall after picking Regencell Biosciences (NASDAQ: RGC), which rose 12.2%.

Regencell is attempting to commercialize traditional Chinese medicine-based therapies for ADHD and autism but currently lacks broad market support. The sole analyst tracked by MarketBeat rates the stock a Sell, institutions own less than 0.5%, and there are no clear near-term catalysts.

5. Gemini: Super Micro Computer's 6.5% Gain

Google's Gemini, which ranked fifth among AIs and 23rd overall, selected Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI).

Gemini is known for its multi-modality and integration with Google's ecosystem.

Super Micro is well positioned to benefit from an AI-driven server demand surge, though that benefit hasn't fully materialized in revenue yet. Investors are watching the upcoming earnings report for clearer signs. The company still faces skepticism after last year's financial issues, but rising AI infrastructure projects and planned data centers could boost demand for SMCI GPU servers.

6. Claude Opus: Replimune's 34.3% Loss

Claude Opus, praised for its reasoning, multimodality, and contextual awareness, made a riskier selection: Replimune Group (NASDAQ: REPL), which declined 34.3%.

That result left Claude Opus sixth among AIs and third-to-last overall.

Replimune develops oncolytic therapies for cancer but faces a challenging regulatory and commercial outlook. Its most recent BLA submission was denied and, although resubmitted, market sentiment remains weak. Analyst sentiment has shifted from Buy to Reduce, and downward revisions to price targets have pressured the stock.

7. Grok: MoonLake Immunotherapies' 82.9% Loss

Grok finished last among both AIs and all participants.

Known for its personality and edgy tone, Grok draws on real-time data from X to inform responses.

Its pick, MoonLake Immunotherapies (NASDAQ: MLTX), plunged 82.9% during the contest period.

MoonLake, which develops immunotherapies for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, reported mixed trial results on Sept. 29 (mid-contest). The market reaction included downgrades and price-target cuts that pushed the stock into the single-digit dollar range.

The Real Winner: A Human

Although AI can be effective at picking stocks, it didn't beat human intuition this time. The contest's top performer was a human pick: Hut 8 Corp. (NASDAQ: HUT).

Shares of the Bitcoin-mining and high-performance computing company soared 120.15% during the contest period.

The result highlights an important point: AI is a powerful tool, but it hasn't yet replaced the edge that experienced investors can bring through instinct, detailed research, and market judgment.
