Gov. Mike DeWine announced that 150 Ohio National Guard military police will deploy to Washington, D.C., to bolster patrols and provide additional security amid a federal crackdown on crime and homelessness.

The move follows a request from the Secretary of the Army, with Ohio joining West Virginia and South Carolina in sending troops to the nation's capital.

Guard members are expected to arrive in D.C. "in the coming days," DeWine said.

More than 800 officers and federal agents began patrols last week, making 23 arrests the first night, including for homicide and gun crimes. U.S. Park Police have also removed 70 homeless encampments over the last five months.
