American Fact of the Day! On August 22, 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered a significant speech at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he famously declared the ambitious goal of sending an American astronaut to the Moon before the end of the decade. This speech was a pivotal moment in the Space Race, setting the stage for NASA's Apollo program and eventually leading to the historic Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. Kennedy's bold vision inspired a generation and significantly accelerated the United States' space exploration efforts. |
Man with bleeding scalp from hair transplant arrested in Miami after refusing to leave plane On Tuesday, Eugenio Hernandez-Garnier, 27, was detained after refusing to leave an American Airlines flight from Miami to Las Vegas. He had been bleeding from his head due to a recent surgery and was asked to disembark due to concerns over his medical condition and potential contamination. The airline's staff requested that Hernandez-Garnier clean up the blood and change his bandages, but he reportedly had none available. Despite repeated requests from the American Airlines supervisor, Hernandez-Garnier refused to leave the plane, leading to his arrest along with his wife, Yusleydis Loyola Blanca, 32. The incident caused the flight to be evacuated and delayed, affecting over 100 passengers. Hernandez-Garnier, who had undergone hair transplant and liposuction surgeries, and Loyola, who had a breast lift and liposuction, went live on TikTok during their removal, claiming mistreatment and discrimination. FDA approves updated COVID-19 vaccines for upcoming fall and winter season The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved and granted emergency use authorization for updated COVID-19 vaccines, set to be available for the fall and winter seasons. These new vaccines are designed to target the KP.2 strain, an offshoot of the omicron variant, and are produced by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. The FDA has not yet made a decision regarding vaccines from Novavax. Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, emphasized that these vaccines meet the agency's high standards for safety, effectiveness, and quality. Given the decrease in immunity from previous infections and vaccinations, he strongly encourages eligible individuals to get the updated vaccine to better protect against circulating variants. The updated vaccines will be available for individuals aged 6 months and older, with distribution expected in the coming week. Winter months typically see a rise in respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, flu, and RSV, making these vaccines timely. Dr. John Brownstein from Boston Children's Hospital noted that these vaccines are crucial for reducing severe illness and maintaining community safety as respiratory viruses surge. The CDC has confirmed that it is safe to receive a COVID-19 vaccine alongside a flu shot or RSV vaccine. Coverage for the updated vaccines will be provided by Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance, though the previous Bridge Access Program will end in August 2024. For those recently infected with COVID-19, the CDC suggests waiting three months before getting vaccinated. Read more updates here |
