| New DOJ background check rule for gun sellers: The Department of Justice made big moves to cut down on the "gun show loophole," mandating federal background checks for anyone selling firearms – which would include individuals who sell guns on the internet, at a gun show or at a store. The rule is grounded in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a major gun safety legislation signed into law by President Biden two years ago.
Mayorkas GOP-led impeachment trial delayed: Republicans are pushing back the start of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ impeachment trial. Articles of impeachment were supposed to be delivered to the Senate on Wednesday, but GOP lawmakers want more time to prepare. Democrats firmly disagree with the decision to impeach Mayorkas, arguing it’s not the solution to fixing increased border crossings.

Going Deeper: 'Impressive and Terrifying' |
The spy business is busy — and getting busier, so says Mike Casey, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center.
The head of U.S. counterintelligence tells NPR's Ryan Lucas that he sees the scope of foreign spying operations, cyberattacks and economic espionage against the U.S. -- and it's "impressive and terrifying."
There are the usual suspects like China, Russia, Iran and North Korea, Casey says, but there are other actors, including private sector entities and cybercriminals who are also getting involved. What you're looking at is essentially a scene that saved three lives.
The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy recently rescued three sailors who had been stranded on a small Pacific island for over a week after they spelled "help" in the sand with palm tree leaves.
"This act of ingenuity was pivotal in guiding rescue efforts directly to their location," said Lt. Chelsea Garcia, the search and rescue mission coordinator.
The sailors -- all three are men in their 40s -- left Easter Sunday on a 20-foot skiff from two small Pacific islands that make up the Micronesia archipelago, the Coast Guard said. NPR's Ayana Archie reports that six days later a woman called the Coast Guard to report that her uncles had not returned home, triggering the search.
The men returned home on Tuesday. |
