Who had the “over” on the WGA strike hitting 100 days? Oh right - everyone. But when for some reason folks keep on throwing shade at #Barbenheimer by saying the Box Office phenomenon is not “repeatable” - as if all Box Office phenomenons have fit the same pattern or something… 4 recent ones alone all fitting a mold of course 🙄🤬 (#GentleMinions, Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar 2, and Super Mario) - ladies and gentlemen… I give you the follow up to the February wildlife-centric Box Office phenomenon: Meet Hot Tub Bear! I mean hey, Elizabeth Banks said if an opportunity for a sequel came up… she’d “take it.” - I’m totally in to hang with this guy on the big screen come Fall 2024.
NOW: Who’s gonna tell him what happened to his cousin, and that the “delivery” for the party tonight isn’t gonna make it? 😬 AND: You know it’s going great when you can’t even do the new storefront signage correctly… 🤦♂️
THEN: Bradley Cooper is not attending VENICE for NETFLIX’s Maestro World Premiere. PLUS: FOX SPORTS is putting a ring on it with Alex Rodriguez, making him exclusive to FOX in a new deal extension, thought to be for at least 3 years… so no more ESPN Baseball side hustle for Alex next season. /THR
ALSO: The USWNT advanced to the next round of the World Cup with a not entirely convincing 0-0 tie with PORTUGAL… they were actually uh, saved from hugely embarrassing defeat by PORTUGAL hitting the goal post with a kick at the 91 minute mark.
A REST IN PEACE: Goes out to Paul Reubens, who died at the age of 70 after a several-year battle with cancer.
WAKEUP BOX OFFICE POLLThe Ninja Turtles are taking Summer hours and dropping in theaters this evening in previews… I haven’t seen too much tracking out there - but sentiment seems somewhere broadly around mid $30s for the 5 day. So in honor of the 4 TMNT fellas, let’s do a 4 play:
IN TODAY’S EDITION:Ok yeah it’s crickets out there (not the INDIA kind) for deal news… Except of course for Iger getting the band back together at DISNEY, bringing in Mayer & Staggs (a law firm I’d totally hire btw) as DISNEY consultants on what to do with a Linear TV business… that you’d think would have already had a 2020s plan formulated in the wings about 5 to 7 years ago. #CordCutting - who knew amirite? 🤷♂️ Mayer is of course already also consulting at WBD, so I guess his recent experience with TIKTOK, NFT’s, DAZN and PE Production Company investing makes him the go-to guy to figure out the… Cable TV business. Sadly Eisner is still waiting by his mouse-ears phone. All kidding aside - the DAZN insight will certainly come in handy with determining ESPN Streaming options, and these two guys definitely know where the bones are buried in the Linear TV business at DISNEY. Ah jeez - Calm down Goofy! They’re metaphorical bones. SO: I’ll take a look at the Global Film Piracy chart this week - Jackie Chan’s still got it apparently, and another rarity arises with a brand new theatrical pic also joining the list. Then an update of DISNEY’s Summer overview from yesterday, including a back of the napkin P&L overview. PLUS: #MediaNerd🤓 returns to break down the latest things to know in the Satellite Radio business from SIRIUSXM this morning, and then we’ll be on our way today. 📽 THE SILVER SCREEN
