Destination Relaxation (or Not?)

In the wake of Memorial Day weekend, I’m officially in summer mode—and as both a self-proclaimed extrovert and an editor who covers travel, my calendar for the next few months is chock-full of trips. While I love having plans and especially travel plans (hello, vacation anticipation), I've also found that expectations about such travel don’t always line up with reality.

Sure, I’m taking PTO for my upcoming personal travel, and I’ll be technically offline for part of some travel I'm doing to scope out properties for work reasons, but that doesn’t mean I’ll always return home refreshed. After all, I’ll be beholden to itineraries created by or with others. Which is why I felt so seen when I read writer Jessica Goodman’s take on the differences between a vacation and a trip: Whereas the former is “time dedicated to pure relaxation,” the latter involves travel where you “are still responsible for major daily tasks (whether that’s work- or family-related), and you may not have control over the destination or itinerary,” she writes.

Recognizing the difference is important because of the mental-health impact of a trip versus a vacation. While the latter is restorative by definition—a balm against burnout and an opportunity for cup-filling experiences—the former can leave you feeling “like you need a real vacation once you’re home from the trip,” says therapist Heidi McBain, LMFT

That’s not to say that trips, themselves, can’t also include rewarding experiences and moments of leisure. But understanding that they might not give me the relief of time truly off is helpful for setting realistic expectations. Plus, it’s all the more reason for me to proactively schedule moments of me-time during those obligation-heavy trips, as frequent traveler Lora Rosenblum suggests, as well as prioritize unplugging during my off hours much closer to home.

I hope you'll enjoy Goodman's story as much as I did—and happy travels!

June is high time for traveling, and we're all expecting this summer to be a scorcher. If your summer vacation involves flying, keep in mind that "airplane dehydration" could throw a wrench in anyone's adventure plans. “Cabin humidity hovers at 10-20 percent compared to the normal 40-60 percent levels we enjoy on the ground. Between low air pressure, desert-like levels of humidity, and decreased fluid intake from rushing between flights—[flying] can be a recipe for dehydration,” says Jennifer Williams, MPH, a hydration scientist with Abbott.

Williams's expert advice? Pregame—with water, of course. “Creating a good hydration base prior to taking off is critical, especially for those longer flights or delays,” she says. “In the 8-12 hours before your trip, do a hydration check and make sure you’re proactively drinking water and other fluids." Williams also recommends sidestepping the in-flight mimosa, packing a reusable water bottle, and noshing on hydrating snacks (like fresh fruit) to maintain your hydration game in the air.

Comedian and TV writer Jessi Klein's 2022 collection of essays, I'll Show Myself Out, is a so-funny-it-hurts read about first-time motherhood as a 40-something. From anguishing over the ubiquitous “mama” necklace to coming to terms with hair loss to finding a jumpsuit that makes her postpartum body feel good, Klein’s comments on the cultural expectations of “mothering” are so refreshing. It’s the book on parenthood and middle age you won't want to put down.

On June 2, Venus in Cancer made a lovely trine of manifestation to Neptune in Pisces, asking us to listen to the force of divine love within—our intuitive voice. It will feel pronounced as the dream for the month ahead solidifies.

Then, today, the full moon in Sagittarius perfects. With Venus still trining Neptune, the dreamy vibes continue; however, because Pluto is squaring the nodes of fate, energy may feel abrupt. At the same time, Mercury, the planet of communication, conjoins change-making Uranus, highlighting a need to look out for shifting plans while heeding the intuitive soul voice guiding us from within. Finally, on Monday, Venus moves from Cancer into Leo, opposing the brute force of truth-telling Pluto.

With Pluto active in the week ahead, it's time to let go of what's blocking the truth. So, tune in and unearth your soul's message, which may surprise you. But you'll be well-guided, so long as you listen. —Jennifer Racioppi, astrologer
