Pay dispute at West Midlands Metro reaches the end of the line

Story 1

After weeks of disruption, trade union members and management at West Midlands Metro have agreed on a new pay deal for staff.

Worth up to 20.1 per cent, the resolution of the dispute will come as a relief to all corners, not least of all beleaguered commuters in the West Midlands who have had to contend with this and a summer of rail strikes too.

Trade union Unite announced in September it was planning more than seven weeks of potential industrial action, running into the first week of next year, in a row over pay.

At one stage, this escalated to all-out action due to start next week before the tram operator came back with a revised offer.

Time has come for BBC to broadcast Digbeth plans

Story 2

Plans have been lodged to create a new home for a multitude of BBC teams in Birmingham. The revamp of the canalside former Typhoo tea factory in the city's Digbeth district is nudging ever closer as council planners now assess whether to grant the scheme consent.

The factory dates back to the 1920s and, frankly, has seen better days but the BBC's ambitious proposals will give the site a brand new lease of life and should kick start even more investment into the area.

Sticking with new developments, plans have now been lodged for a major residential scheme in Birmingham city centre. Developer Commercial Estates Group is behind the plans - reaching up to 56 storeys - for Smallbrook Queensway after they were first unveiled during the summer.

The ever-popular Colmore Food Festival in Birmingham will make its triumphant return next summer after four long years away. It was hit not once but twice by the covid-19 restrictions while this year's event would have clashed with the Commonwealth Games.

The event will also have a new home for 2023 - find out where and more information here.

A support programme for businesses has been given a year-long extension. The Growth Hub scheme is run by Greater Birmingham and Solihull LEP which has vowed to continue with the initiative despite being faced with major organisational changes itself in the wake of the Government's Levelling Up White Paper published earlier this year.

And finally, a Staffordshire supplier to the manufacturing industry is moving home to a new base in Birmingham city centre. EU Automation has struck a deal for space at 10 Temple Street.
