Breaking this morning: *ssholery has consequences: “Adidas terminates partnership with [Kanye West] following rapper’s antisemitic remarks.”
Happy Tuesday. In less edifying news: Kevin McCarthy signaled last week that “getting additional aid from the House for Ukraine would be difficult,” if the GOP wins control. His comments were widely seen as a potentially ominous crack in the bipartisan support for the struggling democracy — and a deeply unhelpful signal to Vladimir Putin. The response from House progressives? Hold our beer.
It’s hard to say what’s more puzzling here: the timing or the substance. As the Wapo notes, the letter “could create more pressure on Biden as he tries to sustain domestic support for the war effort, at a time when the region is heading into a potentially difficult winter and Republicans are threatening to cut aid to Ukraine if they retake Congress.” It was also not at all clear what the progressives were actually proposing. ![]() I just wonder if a single signee here actually has a proposal. An actual scenario for what these "vigorous diplomatic efforts" will look like. A real offer that will make Putin withdraw from all Ukrainian territory. Because maybe we're all missing something here, enlighten us Others pointed out the “costs” of failing to win. ![]() Strangely, this article doesn't explore the costs of "not" winning the war: mass murder/enslavement of Ukrainians, Russia empowered to use nuclear blackmail again. Nor does it explain how we persuade Putin to negotiate since his goal, elimination of Ukraine, remains unchanged. The good news here is that some Democrats pushed back hard, and the Biden Administration made it clear that it had no intention of rewarding Putin with direct negotiations that would cut out Ukraine. “We’re not going to have conversations with the Russian leadership without the Ukrainians being represented,” Biden spox John Kirby told reporters. “Mr. Zelensky gets to determine — because it’s his country — what success looks like and when to negotiate.” Other congressional Democrats quickly distanced themselves from the Prog Caucus. Here’s Arizona Democratic congressman Ruben Gallego: ![]() The way to end a war? Win it quickly. How is it won quickly? By giving Ukraine the weapons to defeat Russia. ![]() The Washington Post @washingtonpost And Massachusetts representative Jake Auchincloss: ![]() This letter is an olive branch to a war criminal who’s losing his war. Ukraine is on the march. Congress should be standing firmly behind @joebidens effective strategy, including tighter - not weaker! - sanctions. ![]() The Washington Post @washingtonpost The letter was also panned by some progressive activists. ![]() I usually agree with the members of the Progressive Caucus who signed the letter to Biden on Ukraine, but this letter is worse than useless. It will have the opposite of its intended effect. Here's why: 1/x (I’ve unrolled the thread:)
The blowback was strong enough to prompt Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus to put out a statement later in the day "clarifying” the group’s position. And former CPC chair Mark Pocan was reduced to a “dog ate my homework” excuse. ![]() @yoshikoherrera @RepMarkPocan @POTUS Hear you. First, this was written in July & I have no idea why it went out now. Bad timing. Second, it was trying to get to a cease-fire & diplomacy as others were banging war drums, not criticizing Biden. Third, I’ve supported the efforts & will continue. Over analyzed by some. Nevertheless. The signal was sent, and it was… unhelpful. My colleague Bill tweeted: ![]() This, alas, is the professional Left today: Weakening their own Democratic Party two weeks before an important midterm against an authoritarian-inclined and democracy-threatening GOP, and weakening democratic forces abroad courageously fighting against a brutal fascistic invader. https://t.co/c8aivQR5yw ![]() Alex Thompson @AlexThomp The Bulwark and its criticsJesse Singal takes strong issue with a piece in yesterday’s Bulwark, so let’s hear him out: ![]() The Bulwark joins the many outlets badly distorting the evidence on youth gender medicine. "Lack of conclusive evidence" is, if anything, too gentle. For kids who socially transition pre-puberty, then go on blockers, then go on hormones, there are *zero* adult outcome studies.
