|  | Half a century ago, Dome Sukwong stumbled upon a treasure trove of deteriorating reels in an abandoned warehouse. He launched a campaign to establish an institution to house them. Now the Thai Film Archive complex, located in a remote Bangkok suburb, is the city's most comprehensive film center. A team trained at the facility cares for around 8,000 documentaries, 1,500 features and almost 50,000 newsreels that stand as the main evidence of a Thai film industry from before World War II. As the archive founder has put it in a memoir, "I had a passion for watching films ... like an incurable sickness." "[I] never dreamed I would be the one to become directly involved in the founding of a [Thai] national film archive." |
