 | TOKYO -- As Japan feels the strain from its seventh wave of the coronavirus, a move is afoot to reclassify the disease it causes into a category that includes seasonal influenza.
An advisory panel to the government will look into recommending that COVID-19 -- now in its own category -- be placed in category 5, which includes the flu.
Medical centers would no longer have to report all cases, easing their burden. But patients with category 5 illnesses do not receive public funding, as they do with COVID, so this help could be retained for the disease for now.
