Dyson founder calls home working rights plans 'economically illiterate'

Hello, and welcome to Friday's edition of our South West newsletter. 


For many of us, one of the continuing changes to everyday life hastened by the Covid-19 pandemic, is a greater flexibility over when, where and how we work. 


For some, including yours truly, that may mean still largely working from home, with trips to the office or other public workspaces becoming once or twice-weekly occurrences - if nothing else to break the week up at times. 


There have been strong opinions either way on the pros and cons of adopting the flexible working model.  Sir James Dyson has drawn his line in the sand on the matter, dubbing new government plans to allow millions of workers the ability to request flexibility from day one of their employment, as "economically illiterate".


In a scathing assessment of the policy, the founder of the Wiltshire-based tech and household appliances firm said the plans would "hamper employers' ability to organise their workforce".

Motor retailer Vertu seals biggest deal in firm's history with £120m South West acquisition

Originally established in Cornwall in 1960 as a single fuel station and repairs workshop, Helston Garages has grown to become one of the country's larger premium car dealership groups, with a turnover of around £500m.


The family-run business sells BMW, Ferrari and Land Rover vehicles at sites across the South West. 


The company has now been acquired in a bumper £120m deal by Motor retailer Vertu - the largest completed in the Tyneside listed firm's history.

Gloucester Rugby chief executive highlights 'opportunities' after Premiership Rugby turmoil

I recently attended a business breakfast event at Gloucester Rugby's ground Kingsholm, attended by local firms and the English Premiership rugby side's commercial partners. 


In addition to a top, top quality breakfast, I had the opportunity to meet representatives of many interesting companies operating in the area.


The club's chief executive Lance Bradley provided an update on the knock-on effects felt around the league since Wasps and Worcester Warriors entered administration.


Mr Bradley told me on the sidelines he expected the Cherry and Whites to continue to be one of the few teams in the English game's elite division to turnover a profit, despite the current cost-of-living crisis.
