Crewe roadworks cause further misery | | | Misery has continued for commuters and residents as further anger was voiced over the 80-week roadworks project in Crewe.
The work on the North West Crewe Package (NWCP) began one month ago and has caused no shortage of disruption in and around the town ever since. Previously, an ambulance was forced into a U-turn after trying to find its way around the closure currently in place on Middlewich Road. And now the Fishy Business chippy on Minshull New Road has been forced to close with the owners blaming the roadworks. They claimed to have lost 'nearly half' of their business as a result of drivers using the road as a diversion. They added: "This really isn't something we wanted to do but the council have left us with no choice." The closure of Middlewich Road between Smithy Lane and Pyms Lane will be in place until the end of October. Cheshire East Council has urged drivers to use the recommended 10.6-mile diversion route.
| | Councillors have warned of 'danger on the roads' due to 'confusing' diversion | | | Meanwhile, three Cheshire East Tory councillors have also voiced 'severe concerns' about the project after tackling the diversion route themselves. Cllrs Rachel Bailey, Patrick Redstone and Margaret Simon said: "The diversion signs assume that all road users are familiar with the area, so members of the public visiting Leighton Hospital may get lost and miss their critical medical appointments.
"The diversion signs are contradictory and confusing, which could cause traffic accidents and danger on the roads. "They take little or no account of a family member trying to access Accident and Emergency with a poorly loved one; it is essential to note that not all emergencies access our hospital via ambulance." The comments were made in a letter to the council's chief executive Lorraine O'Donnell, who they've asked to accompany them on a drive around the diversion route.
