Cancer is the ninth leading cause of mortality among children between the ages of 5 and 14 in India. However, during the last few years, significant progress has been seen in the treatment of children's cancer in India. Now he is being treated by fully trained and experienced Pediatric Oncologists. With treatment in state-of-the-art medical institutions, the survival rate of children has increased from 75 percent to 79 percent over the course of five years.

According to Dr. Vikas, more than 10 types of cancer have been seen in children. Some of these common cancers include acute leukemia, brain tumor, lymphoma, neuroblastoma, Wilm's tumor, retinoblastoma and soft tissue sarcoma. Of these, most cases of acute leukemia (blood cancer) have been found in children, which is more than a third of all types of cancer.

There are two types of acute leukemia

Dr. explained that there are two types of acute leukemia: acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Of these, ALL is about three times more common than AML. It is important to know that these children are treated only by a pediatric hemato-oncologist. Because children's mentality and their sensitivity towards chemotherapy drugs are very different from adults. Which only a pediatrician can understand. Chemotherapy works well for most patients with ALL. However, 5-10 percent of these cases are extremely risky. They can be successfully treated through bone marrow transplant.

These are symptoms

Dr. said that there are some danger signs in children, on seeing which the family physician or pediatrician sends the child to the pediatric hemato-oncologist. These include low levels of hemoglobin, low or high white blood cell counts and low platelet counts, and these findings may not always be linked to nutrients or infections. Parents should consult a doctor if the child repeatedly complains of unexplained fever, lethargy, bleeding, bone pain and swelling in the neck.
